It works by deactivating an enzyme present in our body called PDE5 or Phosphodiesterase - 5 which causes increased blood flow to the penis and is capable of causing long and sustained erection in men.

Working of Drug

As mentioned earlier, Sildenafil Citrate works by increasing blood flow to the penis causing a long and sustained erection. To understand how this drug affects, we first understand the anatomy of the male erection. Male erection is achieved when a chemical called NO (nitrous oxide) is produced in the male penis which activates an enzyme called 'guanylate cyclase'. This guanylate cyclase converts a natural chemical in the body called GTP into C-GMP and this C-GMP is responsible for erection. Sildenafil inactivates the PDE-5 enzyme responsible for the breakdown of GMP. In simpler language, Sildenafil breaks down the enzyme (PDE-5) which is responsible for reducing the erectile effect of another enzyme (C-Gmp).

Sildenafil Citrate has the highest oral absorption compared to other drugs in the same class, as it is absorbed up to 92% orally. Sildenafil takes approx. 1 h to achieve its maximum effect on the human body, which decreases with the consumption of high-fat foods.
